Just For You

Mom, I'm BOOORED!

An excerpt from Home Court Advantage (p.184-5) by Dr. Kevin Leman

We’ve all heard it:  “I’m bored.”  And we’ve heard it more than once.  According to Dr. Kevin Leman, “A parent’s job is not to entertain the children.  There’s no satisfying a child’s appetite for the latest, most amusing activities anyway…But crucial development happens in that void for both child and adult.  That silence allows us to get in touch with what’s going on inside ourselves:  our search for meaning, identity, and answers to unresolved questions; our frustrations; our pains; and our future direction.  By taking time to sit in silence, pondering questions and facing doubts and fears, we grow emotionally and spiritually.”

Next time your little darling says she’s bored, use Dr. Leman’s reply, “That’s okay, honey.  You can be bored.  You can be bored all day.  When you’re done being bored, welcome back to life.”

MATERIALS:
  • Red or brown permanent marker
  • Red, pink, or brown craft foam
  • Scissors
  • Wrapped lollipop
  • Pen
  • White office label

1. Use a marker to draw a mustache or lips onto craft foam. Cut out the shape with scissors.

2. To slide the lollipop through the foam, make a hole using a small punch as shown or make a tiny slit with a craft knife (a parent's job). Slip the lollipop through the hole. Next, cut the label in half if necessary, write a message on it, and fold it around the stick.

Black Bean Tortilla Pie

Like Mexican?  Try this recipe.  It’s simple to make, lowfat, and YUMMMY!
  • 1 can black bean soup
  • 1 can low-fat refried beans
  • 1 jar hot sauce
  • tortilla shells
  • cheddar cheese
  • sour cream
Mix together black beans, refried beans and half the jar of salsa.  Spread thin layer of salsa mixture over bottom of a casserole dish.  Place one tortilla in bottom of dish.  Pour salsa mix over tortilla.  Sprinkle generously with cheese.  Layer another tortilla.  Cover with salsa mixture.  Sprinkle generously with cheese.  Continue to layer until you have made three layers.  Pour any remaining salsa mix over the tortillas.  Top with cheese.  Bake at 350 degrees until cheese is melted and bubbly.  To serve, slice as a pie or spoon out desired portion.  Top with sour cream.  Garnish with shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes.

Household Tips

Removing Hairspray Residue
You can use this formula to remove hair spray residue from any hard surface -- vanities, tile, floors, walls, etc. Mix a solution of 1/3 liquid fabric softener and 2/3 water in a spray bottle. Spray on the surface to be cleaned, and wipe. Not only does it remove hair spray, it also acts as a dust repellent and shines vanities beautifully.

Fast fix for loose buttons
Losing the button off your jacket but don’t have time to sew it back on? Use a dab of clear nail polish to seal the threads onto the center of the button as a temporary solution.

Keep clothes fresh
Before you put your clothes away for the winter, insert a fabric softener sheet, lavender sachet or to keep them smelling fresh for next season.

The Most Excellent Way

And now I will show you the most excellent way...

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.  If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.  If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.  Love is patient, love is kind.  It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no records of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  Love never fails.
